We’d like to share news with you about the latest update to StarCraft II and why we recommend your readers to check out Patch 2.1 that has just been launched today.
Blizzard has a long history of embracing a community of independent developers and modders with custom tools and support for new and innovative gameplay. This has ushered in some of the biggest genres in gaming like Tower Defense, MOBA’s and much more.
Today with StarCraft II Patch 2.1, Blizzard is opening up a thriving developer and modding ecosystem to a much larger audience, completely FREE! Patch 2.1 offers “The Arcade” to anyone with StarCraft II Starter Edition (a completely free installation). “The Arcade” is portal and showcase for new maps, custom mods and full-fledged games that has been organically created by the StarCraft II community.
But that’s not all, and in addition to the free Arcade, here are some major features that are available with Patch 2.1:

- Custom games unlocked
- Any map, custom team games, 1v1 custom, vs. AI
- All three races now unlocked
- Custom games unlocked
- Clan and Group Improvements
- More leveling awards and XP bonuses
- Classic StarCraft Soundtrack
- Extension Mods - Extension Mods will allow you to easily apply the parameters of the mods you develop to any map without having to recreate them every time you want to see how they play on a new map.
- Warcraft III Orc Heroes – Now available for map developers in the StarCraft II Editor
- Art Tools trailer – A video covering the official Art Tools Blizzard uses to create 3D art in StarCraft II
