It's been 25 years since the release of the quirky (and challenging) puzzle game Chip's Challenge on the Atari Lynx and Windows 3.1 (before they even started naming it after years!). It was a pretty big hit for a game of its type. In fact the game's creator Chuck Sommerville even developed a sequel, but it was never released.
As the story goes, Chuck created Chip's Challenge 1 in ten weeks, then spent two years designing Chip's Challenge 2. But when he was finished, he found that the trademark had been sold and the new owners wanted him to pay the costs of publishing the sequel himself. Since he had just spent two years developing a game on his own and at his own cost, Chuck couldn’t afford this, so Chip’s Challenge 2 was shelved, seemingly forever.
Chuck Sommerville:
But after years of fan interest and pleading and an additional five years negotiating with the trademark owners, Chip's Challenge 2 is now ready to see the light of day, and every single one of its "lost levels" are available on Steam, along with the original game.
Sommervilel again:
“I’m so excited about getting to finally release Chip’s Challenge 1 & 2 on Steam, it’s defiantly one off the bucket lis. We’ve added loads of Steam features including Achievements, Cloud Saving & Trading Cards to the original code. Oh and the ability to save your game progress, rather than using the old code system.”
You can get both games for $4.99 on Steam, or just Chip's Challenge 2 if you happen to still own the first one. You can buy Chip's Challenge 1 for just $1.99, and finally, there's a DLC Editor for Chip's Challenge 2, going for $2.99.
