From Failbetter Games:
Failbetter Games today revealed details of their upcoming sequel to Sunless Sea, Sunless Skies: a 2D, top-down, story-led game of exploration, corruption and jeopardy for PC, Mac and Linux.
Set in the Fallen London Universe, Sunless Skies takes players beyond the bounds of Sunless Sea’s underground ocean and out into a Victorian nightmare vision of space.
“Players will be exploring a universe steeped in celestial horror and ravaged by Victorian ambition,” says Narrative Director Chris Gardiner. “Ten years have passed since the events of Sunless Sea, and Queen Victoria has led an exodus from London to the heavens. She’s forging another Empire - more ambitious and authoritarian than the one on Earth.”
“The idea of Victorians in space is absurd,” says CEO and Art Director Paul Arendt, “but when you get beyond that, it’s actually terrifying. What would that much industrial hunger and capability do, if it were untethered by gravity and far from the moral compass of home?”
Players will explore the ‘High Wilderness’ in a locomotive spaceship, their every foray into space as precarious as a Polar expedition. They’ll need to balance their resources carefully and keep an eye on their crew’s Terror to avoid mutiny and death.
“We’re tremendously excited to bring Sunless Skies to Kickstarter, a platform which helped us find the audience for Sunless Sea,” adds Paul.
“We want to build on everything we learnt when making Sunless Sea to deliver a sequel which distills all of the beloved parts of the original. We are already looking at ways to add depth and variety to combat, and make sure the game is respectful of players’ time.”
Director of Development Liam Welton adds: “Sunless Skies will treat death slightly differently to Sunless Sea, enabling players to continue their journeys onward without having to repeat early game stories. The risk is still there. The opportunities and challenges you’ll face will be stranger, more awful and more tempting.
“The big question for players and their characters in Sunless Skies is: who are you, in the dark? When you’re far from home and law, what will you do to survive, and who will you become?”
The Sunless Skies Kickstarter is aiming to raise £100,000, and closes on 3 March 2017 at 1900 GMT. The game is slated for release in May 2018, with an Early Access release expected in Summer 2017.
