WARNING: Before we dive in, the link below (linked to "assassinated") discusses the murder, along with more pictures of the dead body. Nothing gory, but the murder was real, so if you wanna skip seeing that, don't click the link. Or play the latest episode of Telltale's Batman.
Telltale's Batman has come under fire for trying to solve a murder. The problem is, the murder was real, and it was already solved.
Allow me to explain.
In the new episode of Batman: The Enemy Within, Batman has to use his keen detective skills to solve a murder. Just a day in the life of the caped crusader, right?
Well, in a very strange move, someone at Telltale basically ported a picture of a real dead body into the game, murdered Russian diplomat Andrei Karlov, who was assassinated in December of 2016.
A series of tweets stormed in as incredulous gamers realized that they were more or less looking at a picture of a real corpse.
Telltale had this to say to gamasutra:
“An update to the game has been submitted this morning that will be removing the image across all platforms. We regret this incident occurred, and we are taking appropriate action internally to ensure that we continue to maintain our high standards in Production and Quality Assurance.”
You have to assume (or at least I do) that this was a placeholder they forgot to remove, instead of a malicious attempt to screw with people, mainly because, who the hell would do that? I think they just got lazy and forgot to switch something else in there. But, being the kind soul that I am, I want to believe the best in people.
