Next Up Hero is an "impossibly-hard 2D action game" driven by Community Continue. Inspired by lost childhoods spent at the arcades where "best friends took turns beating unfairly difficult games," Next Up Hero was created so that beating a level is a shared victory, and more fun than playing on your own. So far, it's all sounding good to me, as I would like a better return on those thousands of quarters I spent as a young child in dozens of pizza parlors.
You choose from nine Legendary Heroes with a wide assortment of weapons and abilities, building your character to suit your playstyle. The game is fairly well-packed with weapons, from swords and rocket launchers to laser turrets, bongo drums, and boomerangs. When enough heroes have achieved the required amount of "feats of greatness", the Champion Trial will be unlocked, and this is where things take a turn. Champion Trials are punishing ventures created by Digital Continue's own level designers, specifically crafted to utterly dominate you if you don't have good community communication and teamwork. Basically, the game kicks your ass to prepare you for an epic ass-kicking. Sounds good to me.
Next Up Hero has launches on Early Access on the 11th of January.
