Anxiety ridden Yume Nikki is seeing new life! The game was made over ten years ago, and now is on Steam, with the chance of a new project in the works. What form that project will take is yet to be seen.
Yume Nikki is a minimalist game where you must guide the player character through a dozen different dream worlds. While awake, players cannot leave their room, pointing to themes of despair, loneliness, depression and anxiety. In her dream world, the themes continue. The game has no dialogue and most of the people you run into in-game don't speak to you, and when they do, they rarely look at you while you interact with them. The various dream worlds are all creepy and somber, with a moody soundtrack enforcing the setting. There isn't much to do or interact with, and the game relies heavily (and almost completely) on the atmosphere.
Now that Yume Nikki is on Steam, there might be a follow-up; the game's publisher posted a message and a countdown timer on Steam, with the words, "The countdown to the next Yume Nikki project beings,” next to the timer. The timer should reach zero on the 23rd of January.
