There is a lot of confusion around this game, and it's not all that surprising; the game doesn't look like an MGS title, it's missing a lot of the MGS hallmarks, it has zombies, and it also doesn't look very good. Yuji Korekado, the game's producer, addressed the fan complaints during an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine UK in an attempt to clear up the confusion.
Korekado insinuates that many fans and gamers probably came into the open beta thinking Metal Gear Survive was a continuation of the Metal Gear series, which is crazy, since the game has the words "Metal Gear" in the title. Korekado says he “regrets they caused that confusion.” Basically, this game does not continue the story of MGS, but a little like Revengeance, it is a spin-off happening in the same world, not a sequel to anything. He went on to talk about the game’s in-game purchases and the scale of its single-player campaign.
Karekado claims that there are no loot box-style systems in Metal Gear Survive, and no “pay-to-win” transactions either, saying, "There will not be loot boxes and there will not be pay-to-win types of MTX [microtransations]. There will be things like the accessories in Metal Gear Online, and Forward Operating Base in The Phantom Pain." So, basically he's comparing the purchases to the accessories in the Metal Gear Online series, as well as the stuff available in the Forward Operating Base in the Phantom Pain. He also talked about the size of the single player areas, stating that while it begins small, the area expands and leads to more story missions and side content.
Metal Gear Survive will be available on February 20 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
