Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has an ending that you can only see if all players dismantle their nuclear weapons. As in, all in-game nukes must be disarmed, which is nearly impossible, thanks to hackers and haters. But last week, it looked like humanity had done the impossible, because the ending triggered! But the nukes were not disarmed. Many people, all around the world, gasped and said, "Huh. Weird." Let's dig into the mystery!
The nuclear disarmament option was found some time ago by enterprising gamers looking through the game-files. They found a hidden cutscene where Big Boss and his cronies declare that there are no more nukes. In-game, players can build nukes, and others can steal them, so a lot like the real world, I guess. Over time, players have tried to achieve this ending, but to no avail, since digital people are just as big of dicks as real-life people. Too bad.
So it appeared that this whole thing was a big mistake, and it was confirmed when the official Metal Gear Twitter account tweeted the following:
“The nuclear disarmament event was triggered in the Steam version of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on Feb 2nd at approximately 12:00 GMT,” the account said. “We are still investigating, but can confirm that the event was triggered while the nuke count hadn’t reached zero.”
There you have it folks. Banish your dreams of humanity working together towards a common goal of peace and freedom. In fact, why not celebrate by building or stealing a nuke today!? Good job humanity. You've done exactly what we expected you to do, for the millionth time in a row.
