Mario is heading back to the big screen, and we will see if this film is the absolute calamity that the first one was! At least with this go-around it isn't going to be live-action, so maybe the cartoon approach will lend itself better to the ins and outs of the mushroom kingdom.
Nintendo is partnered with Illumination Entertainment to make this film happen, and legendary creator Shigeru Miyamoto is set to produce, which bodes quite well for the movie. There are no more real details than that, as the studio keeping the plot pretty quiet, but I'll keep you in the loop as I hear more. Spoiler alert: I bet they are going to cast an actress in a "Princess-type roll".
Illumination Entertainment is the studio behind Despicable Me and Secret Life of Pets, which was actually pretty damned good, so at least these guys know how to do animated films.
This will mark the first time that Mario has appeared on the big screen since the disastrous 1993 live-action film Super Mario Bros., which starred Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi. The movie was awful, let us never speak of it again.
