All the way back to its release for the PS2, Legend of Kay has been a well-received if not universally known adventure title. Overshadowed by Bubsy, Jak and Daxter and others, it was still loved enough to earn a Nintendo DS port. Now, 10 years later, the game has been remastered and ported to PC, Mac, Linux, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Wii U and now the Switch, under the name Legend of Kay Anniversary.
It's hard to believe this title has been around so long, going from PS2 to the Switch, but it's a testament to it's controls, atmosphere and humor that the title is still relevant today. Legend of Kay Anniversary is a "thoroughly remastered" version of the original game, including high-resolution textures, new, more detailed character models, modern rendering techniques and surround sound, breathing some new life into this old title.
The story is somewhat played, but the animal angle and the heart of the tale makes it stand out. Plus, you have to remember that this game was before Kung Fu Panda. The story surrounds the mystical land of Yenching, which is inhabited by many animals, (mainly cats) including rabbits, frogs, and pandas. Due to a religious code called the Way, these four races have prospered throughout the ages in their own separate towns. But now, the younger generations have begun to defect from the Way, and with no protective code to guide the races, Yenching is invaded by the Gorillas and the Rats (known as the Din), led by Gorilla Minister Shun and Tak, the Rat Alchemist. Minister Shun now rules the majority of Yenching with an iron fist, and is said to reside in the volcanic mountain of Waa-Lo.
In the face of this unrest, we find our hero, a cat named Kay, who does not believe in The Way, and just wants to focus on kicking ass and getting swole. I hear that. He's got the find the faith, kick some ass, and save the day.
Featuring a humorous story, 25 different levels with over 15 enemy types and boss battles, you can choose from 3 different primary weapons (sword/hammer/claws), each with distinct combat styles. There are also various mini-games, like wild boar racing, dragon flying and wolf riding.
Legend of Kay Anniversary will release for the Switch sometime this year.
