Rainbow Six Siege is jumping on the zombie bandwagon with Outbreak, the new, three-player co-op game mode to be introduced in the Operation Chimera expansion, available March 6th. But is this just some tacked on nonsense, or is it the real deal?
The Outbreak takes place in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, with the Rainbow team tackling the "epidemic" that is ravaging the town. You will be able to visit some very different locations than you'll find in the main game, clearing a hospital, a resort, a junkyard, abandoned houses and more. There is a narrative that runs through the three maps, with radio calls and cutscenes, so the game doesn't just toss you in the middle of a thousand waves of zombies with no context or objectives. There are multiple enemy types to take down, in addition to "boss level" enemies that require special tactics and cooperative play to put them in the dirt for good.
There are also two difficulty levels for Outbreak: Normal and Pandemic. While both play the exact same way, players who want to really get after it can switch on Pandemic mode, which features stronger enemies and the activation of friendly fire.
It's odd that with so much prep and detail going into the DLC, it's only running for a month. I'll bet mad bitcoins that if it's a hit, we will be seeing the mode return sooner rather than later.
