Well, this could definitely be a bad thing. Upcoming mutant horror flick, New Mutants, looks great, but there might be trouble in paradise. Being described as "The Breakfast Club" meets "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest", the movie's release date was recently pushed back, as it sounds like they need the extra time to do some reshoots. This isn't anything to panic about in itself, as great movies frequently need a little more time, whether it's polishing CGI or just pickup shots. Often, this isn't indicative of a bad movie, just a movie that needs to polish some rough edges.
However, The Hollywood Reporter has indicated that the changes to the film are bigger than your everyday reshoots; it sounds like they are going to add a brand new character, which does not sound like a good thing. If you are adding a new character, a lot needs to change, and a lot needs to be reshot or added. There's no word yet about who this character is (one would assume it would be another mutant, but nothing is for sure), but it is odd that a film would basically finish shooting, then decide they need a brand new character to round out the movie. Kinda seems like that would be handled in the scripting phase, doesn't it?
Ana Taylor-Joy, who plays Magik in the movie, had this to say about the delays:
"Josh and I are really close, and he's a really wonderful collaborator, because he really keeps us involved in everything with the movie. He doesn't treat us like, 'You guys act and I make the vision.' He keeps us very involved in it, and incredibly invested. I think we have such a responsibility to the fans that we are going to make this movie right, and if that takes a bit more time, even though it's disappointing for people that we're not coming out at our April 13th slot, I think if we deliver a really great movie overall people will be happier. So we're striving for that! We're trying to make the best movie that we possibly can for the people who care about these characters."
The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (Atlantis) as Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Dani Moonstar and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot.
The New Mutants new release date is Feb. 22, 2019.
