Indie developer Sobaka Studios and publisher Buka Entertainment just joined forces to release the oddly named 9 Monkeys of Shaolin, an old school beat 'em coming to consoles and PC. Best known for their throwback top down shooter, Redeemer, this new title is a close-quarters fighting game in the vein of Double Dragon, where you will punch and hack your way through enemies using ancient martial arts that were only mastered by legendary Shaolin monks. Awesome.
The story follows "a mere Chinese fisherman" named Wei Cheng, who needs to avenge the death of his friends and family who were slaughtered in a pirate raid at his otherwise peaceful village. Luckily, he knows the basics of ancient martial arts, and how to throw down with a battle staff. Wei will get three unique fighting styles tied to elements, allowing you to fight on earth, in the air or you can use magic seals which you can combine with various elements. You'll also have unlockable perks, fighting styles and polearms to whip ass through 25 levels, either on your own or co-op.
The first console demo is available on the Xbox Lobby Bar at GDC this week, so if you are reading this, stop and go play it. 9 Monkeys of Shaolin will be released Fall 2018 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, macOS and Linux.
