Live tournaments are coming back to E3 this June, and the big ones this year are going to be on the Switch, with Splatoon 2 and Super Smash Bros. taking center stage.

Held in Los Angeles on June 11-12, the tournaments will have two different formats, with the Splatoon 2 World Championship pitting four qualifiers against each other from the United States/Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia, making this the first "true" world championship. The Smash Bros. tournament is an invitational, with a similar structure to the 2014 tournament, according to Bill Trinen, and Nintendo marketing manager.

Trinen had this to say:

“We want to have an event that showcases a really high level of play. We want it to be be fun for the players, fun for the fans in attendance and for those streaming at home. We want to have matchups that people want to see.”

Well, who the hell wouldn't, Bill?

Realizing that not everyone has dozens of hours to learn how to play a fighting game, Trinen hopes that non-participants will still have fun watching the game’s spectator modes, which are piloted by a human operator.

If you live in the United States or Canada and want to toss your hat in the ring, you can sign up online for the Splatoon 2 Inkling Open 2018, with matches starting April 21st.

Trinen also said that there will be many E3 announcements regarding Nintendo’s programming, and we should get more info in the coming months.
