Captain Marvel is the newest-used-to-be-a-male-now-is-a-female superhero that is getting the big screen treatment, and there is a chance that some missed opportunities could be rectified in the Marvel world (not that Marvel screws up very often).
The film will follow the newest Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers, as she transitions into one of the universe’s most powerful heroes and figures out what it all means. In the comic, Carol Danvers possessed superhuman strength, endurance, stamina, flight, physical durability, a "seventh sense" (like a precog), and an immunity to most toxins and poisons, but we'll see what her power set will be in the film. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is “an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Which I suppose is just a fancy way of saying she's not one of the avengers. Yet.
The really cool thing here is that since the story takes place in the Marvel past, we'll get to see younger versions of characters, and dead characters will make a return as well, since they haven't been killed yet. The cast (so far) includes Samuel L. Jackson (S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury), Lee Pace (Ronan the Accuser) Djimon Hounsou (Korath) and fan favorite, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson. Not that Marvel crapped the bed with these characters, but killing Coulson was arguably a stupid thing to do, and personally I think they could have done something cooler with Ronan. We'll see if bringing these characters back will do anything for fans, or if they will just be a blip in the film.
Principal photography has already begun in Los Angels, and the movie is slated for a March 8th, 2019 release.
