Well, Venom has finally gotten some screen time in the new trailer below, and it's about time. I was never one of these morons overzealous fans who were sure (after one short, glorified teaser trailer) that Eddie Brock wasn't going to become Venom until the end of the film. Although it makes a lot of sense that tons of people would think that. I mean, they didn't show Venom in the entire first trailer, what else are thousands of people going to think? Like, this morning I had no bacon in the fridge, so of course I assumed that all the pigs in the world had died! I've been panicking all day...
Hardy was recently at CinemaCon for the reveal of this latest trailer, and not only did he confirm that he voices both Eddie and Venom, but he spoke on why he chose the role:
“I just have to say, being a part of this movie and playing Venom is truly a dream come true for me, because to be brutally honest, I was looking to do a movie that initially my son could watch,” Hardy said, according to EW. “It appealed massively to me because he’s one of my favorite characters, and I chased after this movie both for me…and for my son.”
Awww. How cute. Not sure Venom is the superhero movie I'd pick for a child, but that's just me. Anyways, we get the shot of Venom at the end of the trailer, so it seems like everyone's favorite anti-hero is going to be in the movie after all, and even though this trailer is mainly a story synopsis, we do get a fair amount of action, mainly with Eddie using the symbiote's tentacles and tendrils to smash a bunch of henchmen around, and re-seat him on his motorcycle after a wicked jump. It's pretty close to how his powers work in the comics, but I assume that he won't have webs in this version, with Venom traversing the environment with tendrils like Ultimate Venom.
Speaking of versions of Venom, I didn't see the white spider on his chest, although it's hard to tell. Which got me thinking, why would he have it? Venom doesn't really have anything to do with spiders without his hatred for Spider-Man. In fact, Venom taking the form he does take is based on the symbiote's time with Peter Parker, and when he hooks up with Eddie, the symbiote just makes a more exaggerated version of the black spidey suit. It's going to be interesting to see how they do the story, since there isn't really a Venom without Spidey. I hate to say it, but I am worried this is going to be yet another one and done for Venom, who will be properly introduced into the Marvel world another 5 years down the line or so.
What do you think? Does this version have what it takes? Is this flick going to be a flop? Let me know in the comments.
