With the Rock starring in the "decently" received 'Rampage" some believe that the video game movie curse has been broken, including the Rock himself. I do not agree with that, since I don't believe a 50% on RT qualifies as breaking the curse. 50% is not a very good grade, but I'll admit I haven't seen Rampage yet, so maybe it's better than the reviews have led me to believe. In any event, the Rock recently pointed out that he has "lived the video game curse", since he previously starred in the horrifically received DOOM. I looked up a few clips, just to remind myself of how bad that movie was.
My God, the movie was awful.
This almost worries me more, since the bar is so damn low, but hey, if this new DOOM flick sucks, I thought to myself, we can just wait a few years and they'll inevitably reboot it again.
Then I got more bad news.
According to a report from ScreenRant, this new iteration from Universal is set to go straight to to DVD and digital libraries. What the hell? You know how awesome this movie could be, played straight? A space marine, trapped off-planet who must shut down (and maybe travel to) a demonic hellscape, armed with nothing but a shit ton of amazing weapons? Yeah, in a world where we make shows out of the Lethal Weapon films (one cops cuts, the other, not as much!), somehow, Hollywood doesn't think this movie could be great with the right director. Boy, this stuff pisses me off.
I suppose that after the successful relaunch of the game in 2016 (and its subsequent success), they want to test the waters with a straight to DVD affair. Sounds like a stupid idea to me, but what do I know?
What do you think? Should they reboot this on the big screen? Does DVD make sense to you? Should they just leave well enough alone? Lemme know in the comments.
In the meantime, soak up the awfulness that is the original DOOM trailer below.
