This game is getting so much controversial hype, you have to wonder if the actual gameplay can live up to the hysteria. Don't get me wrong, there have been tons of games that are "controversial", like old school God Of War, various GTA titles, etc. that had a swirling maelstrom of controversy surrounding them, and they still managed to live up to the hype and be good games, not just controversial games, but I am having a hard time remembering a game that is bringing the grossness quite like this.
First off, the game is literally set in hell, and although DOOM and Dante's Inferno has done that before (as well as a few other games), I don't think we've ever seen hell quite like this. You've got babies getting tossed off cliffs, Sparta style into gaping mouths, doorways and pathways made of molars (ew), bloody, flesh lined tunnels, and monster demons with big boobs and teeth lined vaginas for faces, which I for one think is quite gross. At some point, kind of like the Trump presidency, you gotta try and block out some of the noise and figure out what is really going on. Is there a good game under all this? Or is it just a gory, gross-out mash em up of disgusting awfulness?
This new trailer probably won't swing anyone one way or another, but it does give you more info on the story and a bit more on the setting, which again, is literal hell. Agony features the aforementioned full-fledged story mode as well as an open challenge system that randomly generates levels for players to explore and survive to gain new high scores.
The gameplay is mainly you trying to stay alive and solve the riddle behind the mysterious Red Goddess, who is, and I quote, "the architect of this place of sorrow and pain, and the sole entity with knowledge of how escape..."
If you want out, you'll need to avoid getting, well, killed I guess, and you're aided by the ability to possess demons and other souls to find their way out of hell.
Check out the story trailer below, and bring your barf bag. Agony has an official release date of 05/29/2018 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
