James Marsden, known mostly for his roles as the ineffectual husband in Superman Returns, the nearly-killed-offscreen cyclops in the X-Men movies, and most recently, the ineffectual, keeps-getting-killed-Teddy in Westworld, finally has a role that most likely will not involve him being slaughtered or made a fool of; Marsden will play Sonic the Hedgehog in Paramount's upcoming live-action/animated hybrid film.
Since Sega released the original Sonic game in 1991, there have been many different incarnations of the character, from various cartoon series, comic books, toys and more. The game has sold over 360 million copies, across myriad platforms and was once a major contender for the top spot that Mario has held since time immemorial. In the game, Sonic is trying to save a bunch of animals who have been captured by Dr. Robotnik, often with his number one homey, Tails. It was only a matter of time before the hedgehog received his own feature film.
As reported by Variety, Marsden will take on the role of the blue speedster, directed by Jeff Fowler, who is making his directoral debut in the upcoming film. The studio landed the film rights to the old school side scroller in 2017.
“Deadpool” director Tim Miller will executive produce the film, with Toby Ascher, Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons as co-producers.
Sonic the Hedgehog is set for release Nov. 15, 2019.
