Exotic Matter just launched on Steam early access with a pretty lofty goal: to be a fusion of Metroid and Minecraft. Now, yes, I know, almost every other game these days is trying to toss Metroid into the title and hope to cash in, but if you watch this trailer and think about Metroid Prime, you can kinda see it (or at least I can).
In Exotic Matter, players find themselves shipwrecked on an alien planet, light-years away from earth, with the primary mission being to just stay alive (that's also everyone's primary mission, but I digress). Billed as a single-player open-world voxel roleplaying game, E.M. leans on a strong storyline as you explore the open-world of planet ‘Xcylin’ and delve into the roguelike underground facilities of an extinct race to fight the diabolical Thanatos and craft your way back home to save not only yourself, but also the entire human race. Aren't you a helpful one?
The voxel engine lets players create their own items, weapons, blocks and even their own planet types, and the facility generation system ensures that no two missions ever play the same. The really cool thing is that the fully moddable engine allows you to explore theoretically endless other planets that were created by the community.
You can check out the trailer below to see what I'm talking about, it really does look like it might be onto something for those that are finished with Minecraft but still love the unique challenges and abilities it presents.
Exotic Matter is on Steam early access now for $19.99.
