If you don't remember or never caught the PS4 demo of P.T., then you missed out hardcore. The "demo" (no one can actually decide if it's a demo, teaser or trailer) dropped in August of 2014, and was a first-person psychological horror title developed by Kojima Productions, and was published by Konami. The game was directed and designed by Hideo Kojima, in collaboration with film director Guillermo Del Toro, who is kind of a badass.
The game/demo/teaser/whatever was a free download on the PlayStation Network, and was basically a teaser for Silent Hills, a now-cancelled installment in the Silent Hill series. After the cancellation of Silent Hills, P.T. was pulled from the PlayStation Store without the option of re-installing the game, which means that even if you had downloaded it, you could no longer play it. P.T. received mad props for its direction, visuals, story, and tense horror, so people were pretty pissed they never got to see anything further. The following September, Kojima left the company, further killing any chance of the game seeing the light of day. Now, there's more bad news, albeit with a silver lining (but not for us). Allow me to explain.
Broke in a recent blog by Gamejolt, a 17 year old has been working like crazy (180 hours!) on a remake of P.T., a kid who goes by the online handle of Qimsar. He ended up getting a cease and desist order from Konami, which is not surprising at all. What was surprising was that instead of a layer hitting him with legalese, or just a letter or email, a representative called Qimsar and told him that although he does need to take the thing down, he is also being offered an internship!
Here's part of the post from Qimsar, you can read it here in its entirety.
"I have some really good news and really bad news. I got a phone call that I was expecting at about 5:00 A.M. from someone who worked at Konami. He essentially told me that he was very sorry for being the bearer of bad news, but I would have to take down my remake. I was told that he and many other people at Konami saw and really liked my remake, but legit due to legal issues that were out of his or anybody else’s control really, he had to ask me to take down my remake project. I said that I would be willing to do so, and from there, the conversation went from really bad for me to, in my personal opinion (I’m sure you all will have differing opinions), really really good.
...It hasn’t been made super official or anything, but a freakin’ internship for me with Konami in which I would do stuff with Konami US, EU, and Japan. Internships tend to turn into jobs fairly often and for a 17-year old who isn’t even a senior in high school just yet, to get this for the very first game project that he’s ever worked on with 6 hours of prior UE4 experience (and a fair amount of Unity experience (35 hours give or take) but that’s irrelevant :P), that’s pretty good."
So, while we once again are robbed of P.T., at least we do get a creative, talented kid who knows good work when he sees it (or makes it).
