Dead Cells is a tasty slice of Roguevania action-platformer, where perseverance and skill reign supreme. You make your way through a sprawling castle, perfecting your weapon skills learning enemy patterns, exploring for loot and carving a path throughout the "ever-changing" world, in the form of procedurally generated levels with random loot and boss locations.
The player controls a mass of cells that occupy and control the body of a deceased prisoner at the start of each game. Weird! As you explore the dungeons and fight the creatures within, you'll collect weapons, armor, abilities, power-ups, and of course, that sweet cheddar. Some enemies will also drop cells when defeated, which you can grab up to obtain permanent power-ups like additional health potions or new items that can be bought or found in later runs. Much like Dark Souls, these cells can only be spent at the end of a dungeon section; if a player dies before then, they lose all collected cells. There are no checkpoints, so it's the classic kill, die, repeat.
This animated trailer is pretty rad, give it a look below.
Dead Cells will release on Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on August 7th for $24.99.
