I feel like Ryan Reynolds is an odd choice to play Pikachu, but overall I am just shocked at how much better this looks than I expected. Going from something that sounded like an absolute bomb to this trailer is pretty impressive. Check it out below.
There have been a couple animated Pokémon flicks, but this marks the first time they've brought the collectible little pets/friends/freakish muppets to the world of live action. Detective Pikachu stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular character, and before you ask, they are going to solve the whole "Piku Piku!" thing by having Justice Smith understand him, while everyone else just hears cute noises. The film also looks like it will be showcasing a ton of Pokémon characters, with comical results.
The story begins when a private eye named Harry Goodman goes missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu is there to partner with Tim after they find out that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another. Tim and Pikachu join forces, chasing down clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City, a sprawling metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side.
POKÉMON Detective Pikachu arrives in theaters on May 11th, 2019.
