This game brings back a ton of nostalgia for me. Originally for the Sega Genesis Master System (imagine the balls it takes to call your shit the master system), I used to hang out with my buddy, trying to find pieces of spacecraft and generally not really knowing what the hell I was doing. But the characters were fun, the levels were bright and the music was great. All in all, it was a lot of fun, and I was pumped when I heard that there were going to be more games in the series, especially after the disappointing sequel, Panic on Funktron.
Just like the original, the game will play from a fixed, isometric viewpoint, and feature the same basic gameplay, which mainly consists of searching and exploring each layer of a series of floating islands. The sequel, called ToeJam & Earl on Panic on Funkotron, the game was very different than the original, and not necessarily for the better. It looks like this newest adventure will lean way more towards the original, while still implementing some minor side aspects of it, such as the "Jam Out" rhythm-based mini-game. The new game will also feature nine different playable characters, and a four-player cooperative gameplay, with both local and online play.
It's taken quite a while to get this iteration made; it was initially scheduled for a 2016 release, but in August 2016, it was announced that Adult Swim Games had jumped on-board to publish and toss some additional funding at the game to get it done. While this was supposed to increase the amount of platforms the game was released on, it also pushed the title to a 2017 release. Now, the game is going to be self-published digitally by HumaNature Studios, and they are looking at a release in early 2019. Limited Run Games will (presumably) publish physical editions for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
