This game tosses you into a surreal, big brother controlled world, where a computer is calling all the shots. Based on a table-top role playing game set in a dystopian future city controlled by an artificial intelligence construct, your robotic overlord is called The Computer, aka 'Friend Computer'. Initially, players serve as enforcers of The Computer's authority (known as 'Troubleshooters', due to the fact that they "shoot trouble"), and are given missions to seek out and eliminate threats to The Computer's control. The players are also usually included among the aforementioned 'security threats' due to underground activities and will have secret objectives including stealing from and murdering other players.
Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory the game (for PC) is predictably following suit, only instead of a table top, it's a darkly humorous CRPG, where you, a Citizen, are a person Friend Computer officially trusts. In fact, you are so well liked, that you have officially been appointed as a Troubleshooter with Red clearance, with a mission to unearth and neutralize traitors in Alpha Complex.
As is fitting your appointment, you must stay alert, trust no one and keep your laser set to kill because Alpha Complex is not an entirely safe place, despite Friend Computer's "unquestionable kindness". During your missions, you will be tasked with fighting terrorists, treasonous mutants and of course, rampant secret societies. To do this job, you must deceive and scheme to survive because even members of your own team can be a threat. For your own safety, you will constantly be watched, and know that it may be necessary to terminate you without notice at any moment. But, if this happens, there is no reason to worry, as your clones will be instructed to take over where you left off.
The setting and story of the game look great, in a 1984 meets Terminator kind of way. Check it out here on Steam, the game launches later this year.
