You know what? I kind of feel bad for Ben Afleck.
I feel like he was having a rough time. He's getting older, about to get a divorce, maybe the gambling problems are creeping back up, when he gets offered what is perhaps the biggest superhero role of them all. Batman. Bats. The World's Greatest Detective.
The Dark MF'in Knight.
So he takes the role. He's like "Man, Zach Snyder? He did pretty good on the Watchmen and 300 was friggin rad!" (my opinion, I don't know what the hell Afleck thinks)
But Batman V Superman was NOT "friggin rad". It sucked it. And it sucked it hard and good.
The movie was terrible, all of Zach Snyder's signature directing hallmarks were laid bare all at once, (Brooding! Rain Everywhere! Nothing Funny Ever! Slooowwww Mooooooootion!) and the thing just imploded under the weight of its own idiocy.
But you can't say that, can you? Especially when you are still working with the guy.
So he had to dummy up, prompting this amazing clip below.
God I love this.
So...where was I going with this rant? Oh, yeah. Ben Afleck.
So Ben Afleck admits that BvS was justifiably criticized, which comes as a shock to absolutely no one, except maybe Zach Snyder.
In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Afleck had this to say:
(He) “can understand people saying [Batman V. Superman] was too dark, or this was outside the tone of what I’m used to seeing with a Batman story, and I think that’s a fair criticism.” Affleck goes on to say that with Justice League, Snyder “wanted to make a movie that was more fun, that was a little bit light, that wasn’t so encumbered with heavy melodrama.”
No kidding. A movie that is fun and unencumbered by heavy melodrama. Who would have thought that could work in a superhero film?
