Happy Halloween Everybody!
In honor of this frightful day, I’m hitting you with a quick list of some heavyweight horror flicks you may have never seen. I’m always on the lookout for new horror movies, but it's so hard to find good ones these days. Here’s a few that I love, and don’t worry, if I’m telling you something is good, it’s gotta be true.
I have impeccable taste.
The Descent:
This horror flick is claustrophobic, gruesome and brutal, and that’s before the monsters show up. When a group of girls meet up for their annual high-octane get together, they pick the wrong cave to explore.
Before long, they are lost, low on supplies, injured and being hunted. A great, tense film that will make your chest tighten up with anxiety as you watch these women make their way through a series of caves and tunnels, slowly realizing that they are being hunted by something with far superior senses, perfect for hunting in the dark.
The ending is great, the pacing is excellent, and if you are claustrophobic, you will be traumatized.
The Battery:
The Battery is a buddy movie with zombies, in that order. For a lot of the film, the zombies are almost incidental; they simply serve as a framing device. The entire movie only really has two actors (if you dont count the zombies) and although the two leads aren’t the best actors in the world, they do a good enough job playing their roles to still be believable. Sad, funny, scary and an all around good time, if you haven’t checked out this indie gem, you are missing out.
They Look Like People
This movie deals with mental illness...or does it? When a friend is having some problems coping, his old buddy steps up and decides to let him stay at his place to sort himself out. What follows is a slow descent into madness as his mental problems begin to get worse and it becomes harder and harder for him to ignore the voices in his head insisting that the people he sees on the street aren’t human...and his helpful buddy might not be either. A great slow-burn horror flick that builds the tension and dread with excruciating slowness.
Creep
Another small film with only a couple actors, Creep involves a man who needs a bit of quick cash, so he answers a help-wanted ad from a man who wants a very simple thing. A little help with some camera work. When he arrives, he discovers that the project isn’t exactly what was advertised, but since he really needs the money, he sticks around and decides to write it out. What follows is a slow, twisted journey with a childish, but seemingly harmless man. As the day wears on, one lie follows another, things keep getting stranger, and by the end, nothing is as it appears.
Oculus
I love this flick. Based on mirror that houses an evil spirit, there are some great scares in this one, and some truly disturbing scenes. The film centers on a brother and sister when they are children and shows how their family first acquired the mirror. Then, it begins a slow slide as the spirit in the mirror begins to take possession of the kid's dad, then begins influencing the mom with some pretty disgusting tactics. The rest of the film jumps between the two kids as grown-ups trying to destroy the mirror once and for all, and what finally ended up happening to their parents when the brother and sister were still kids. The ending is awesome, the horror is of the jump scare and slow build variety and the make-up is intense.
