Ok, I keep checking the calendar to see if it's friggin April Fools or something, because this is one of the stranger stories that have been circulating, and everything I read just keeps confirming that it's going to happen.
Yesterday I posted some news about a potential Quentin Tarantino directed Star Trek, which, to be honest, I scoffed out loud at. I mean, what the hell would we do with the bridge of the enterprise overwhelmed in rapid-fire dialogue with the "n" word being thrown around? It just doesn't seem like a great idea to me. Tarantino is a master at over the top violence, machine-gun dialogue and great, obscure soundtracks. None of which really seems to make a lot of sense in the context of the Star Trek universe.
And now, today, we have this.
After Quentin Tarantino sent his Star Trek pitch to JJ Abrams and Paramount, things have taken a dramatically speedy turn. Word has it that Tarantino met with Mark L. Smith, Lindsey Beer, and Drew Pearce in a writer's room for hours as they tossed around ideas to see who had the best vision for this potential film. The kicker is that one of Tarantino's conditions is that the film has to be R rated, and apparently, Paramount and Abrams agreed.
Now, I love Tarantino, even if I thought that The Hateful 8 was pretty overlong and the twist was spoon-fed to the audience, which I didn't care for at all. I just am not sure anyone, even (or especially) Trekkies thought, "You know what Star Trek has been missing? The F word and bloodier violence." I just can't see how this match makes any sense.
What do you guys think? Is this is good match-up? Is an R rated Star Trek what we need? Let me know in the comments.
