Marvel fans in Alberta, Canada are in the middle of a full-court press to have a statue erected for the most famous Canadian mutant, James “Logan” Howlett (if that is his real name), aka the Wolverine.
Wolverine is a Canadian from Alberta and was first seen taking a chunk out of the Hulk, albeit originally looking quite a bit more ridiculous.
Logan went on to become a member of the Canadian superhero team Alpha Flight before joining the X-Men. The campaign is pushing for the tribute to be built in Fort McMurray, Alberta, and they're hoping that Wolverine’s mutant healing factor and straight up refusal to die will act as a symbol of hope and rebirth for a region that has struggled due to economic factors and wildfires in recent years.
Apparently the campaign was inspired by Detroit's bid to build a statue of Robocop. I guess that would bring in some tourism? In any event, the Canadian's are pushing for Alberta, a place that already has a bunch of odd landmarks and statues, like a beaver, a baseball bat, a big ol' pyrogy, a replica of the Starship Enterprise and others. They've got an indieGoGo page set up and you can check it out and donate here, and the official video explaining the rationale behind the statue can be found below.
