Gambit just lost its director.

Again.

This time it's Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) who is bailing on the sneaky cajun's X-Men spin-off. I'm not super bummed about the change (I thought the only decent Pirates flick was the first one), but it is strange to see the move so far into the casting process, with shooting on the film reported to begin in March. Verbinski follows in the footsteps of a carousel of departed directors, including Rupert Wyatt in October 2015 and Doug Liman in August 2016.

As a result of Verbinski's departure, Fox announced that the film will be delayed, with a new release date of June 7th being posted.

Gambit has the ability to mentally create, control, and manipulate pure kinetic energy, often transferring it to playing cards, which he hurls at his enemies. Gambit was part of a shadowy thieves' guild before becoming a member of the X-Men, who initially distrusted him given his sketchy history. Gambit remains fiercely proud of his Louisiana heritage and speaks in a thick Cajun accent, so I hope Channing Tatum is practicing.
