Westeros fans may be sad, but Star Wars fans are likely stoked; Disney just announced that GOT creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed up to write and produce a new series of Star Wars flicks.
The series of films will be a departure from the Skywalker family, so there will be no ties to the older films or the new Rian Johnson/J.J. Abrams movies. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, had this to say about David and Dan taking the helm on the newest incarnation of the interstellar series:
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
The pair was last linked to a potential HBO project titled Confederate, which got some preemptive backlash due to its premise, an alternate timeline series where the Confederates won the civil war and slavery wasn't abolished. Not sure how that is radically different from "The Man In The High Castle", but I digress. It sounds like that project is on hold, and the duo are moving to the world of lightsabers and hyperdrives instead of bayonets and slavery.
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ is complete.”
As of this writing, there is no official timeline in place for the new Star Wars series.
