I don't care what Scorsese is doing, to be honest; I will watch it, regardless of what it's about. Luckily though, this sounds awesome. The Caesars will tell the story of Rome's early rulers, starting with your friend, my friend, the big poppa, Julius Caesar. The idea here is to make a series not unlike Game Of Thrones or The Tudors, so a gory television drama that stretches for a few seasons.
Hirst, most popular for his television series, Vikings, has had a lot of success with the show, which claims almost eight million viewers an episode in North America. Hirst had this to say about working with quite possibly the most badass director of our time;
Scorsese is totally passionate about the Romans and has been desperate for many years to make a film or TV drama about them. He genuinely loves the period and knows a lot about it. He got on the phone to Justin Pollard, my historical adviser. They chatted, partly in Latin, about sources for the stories and Roman poetry."
Hirst went on to talk about the themes they will be exploring: The drama will draw parallels with today. The past and the present are virtually the same to me, because it’s just continuity. With the Tudors and Vikings, we make them seem resonant and relevant to people today.”
Filming for The Caesars is expected to begin next year, primarily in Italy.
