We first reported this news in December, when we were all still a little raw from the abomination that was Justice League. I'm pleased to tell you that this project is scooting right along, and it's headed to the US in May of 2018.
The story is a time-traveling affair, where Batman's enemies have traveled back to feudal Japan via Gorilla Grodd's time machine to wreck havoc in the past. Without his sickest tech, but with his best allies, Batman has to put a stop to the insanity.
“The villains take over the forms of the feudal lords that rule the divided land,” says DC Entertainment’s press release, “with the Joker taking the lead among the warring factions. As his traditional high-tech weaponry is exhausted almost immediately, Batman must rely on his intellect and his allies — including Catwoman and the extended Bat-family — to restore order to the land, and return to present-day Gotham City.”
This is less of a novel premise and more of an excuse to re-imagine Batman allies and enemies as samurai-era badasses, but I don't care; the character designs from Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki in this trailer look amazing. There are a couple new snippets here, including a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance by sumo-Bane. Awesome.
Batman Ninja will be available digitally April 24, 2018. With a Blu-ray Steelbook, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD on May 8, 2018.
