These days, you never know what is going to hit. Legion is a show about the son of Xavier (Professor X) that most people didn't even know he had, and that show was one of my favorites of the year. The upcoming New Mutants movie is packed with mutants that no one really knows (I mean, of course I know about Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Cannonball and the rest, but I had a lot of free time from getting laid so little), and there is a ton of hype for it. Deadpool made Negasonic Teenage Warhead cool, and I didn't even know who that was before the movie. My point is, Marvel is scraping the bottom of the barrel (and again, and again), but so far, it's working out beautifully. Without the pull and pressure of a huge name, writers and directors are allowed to play around as much as they'd like. I mean, no one would get pissed off that they screwed up Moon Knight, you know (just kidding, I love Moon Knight, please, please don't screw him up)?
Now we have Cloak & Dagger, a duo that held some popularity in the 90's but have kind of fizzled a bit since then, and they've never really been above "C" list superheroes. Their origin is your typical "street toughs with hearts of gold" fare: Tyrone "Ty" Johnson (Cloak) and Tandy Bowen (Dagger) met in New York City while both of them were living on the street. Ty ran away because he was broke, and over the guilt of not being able to stop his friend from being killed by police. Tandy is basically a spoiled little brat who ran away from her posh upbringing because mommy was too busy for her.
Tandy ends up foolishly accepting an offer of shelter from some strange men, and Tyrone goes along to protect her. The men turned out to be drug dealers and chemists who injected them both with a new drug, which somehow gave them powers, Cloak with his dark void dimension cloak that allows him to teleport, and Dagger, who can throw light knives and glow real bright. They decide to help downtrodden kids and drug addicts, which is great, since Dagger's abilities can somehow cure drug addiction in people.
The show will premiere on June 6 on "Freeform", which unfortunately is the new name for ABC Family. Yeah. Not a lot of shows come out of there alive. It's like a TV graveyard for crap shows. Let's hope Cloak & Dagger can buck this trend. The leads are former Disney star (another bad sign) Olivia Holt (Ultimate Spider-Man) as Tandy Bowen/Dagger, and Aubrey Joseph (Run All Night) as Tyrone Johnson/Cloak. The first season will have 10 episodes, and you can watch the trailer below.
