So I stopped reading the Song of Ice and Fire books when I got to Feast For Crows, and stopped watching the show at about the same time. It's a bummer because I liked both, but I knew there was a looming wall ahead of me with the books, so I put them down with only a twinge of regret. On top of that, I didn't give a damn about an entire book of new characters.
This apathetic approach may be screwing me out of the joys of the series, but it is giving me joy in other ways; mainly listening to everyone I know cry about how the last season of the show was terrible, or how Martin won't get off his fat ass and finish the books, which cracks me up; yelling at a man who won't give you things you love fast enough. Aren't we entitled.
So, in a move that is sure to drive fans absolutely insane, since Martin should be writing ASOFAI if he isn't asleep (and what the hell is he doing asleep, doesn't he have books to write?), we now have a new series on the SyFy channel, from the mind of Martin called Nightflyers, based on a novella he wrote years ago.
Nighflyers follows eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer – a ship with a small tightknit crew and a reclusive captain – in the hope of making contact with alien life. But some heinous shit starts to go down, paranoia runs rampant and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought. Eoin Macken ("The Night Shift") is set to star as Karl D'Branin alongside Sam Strike ("EastEnders") as Thale, Maya Eshet ("Teen Wolf") as Lommie, Angus Sampson ("Fargo") as Rowan, Jodie Turner-Smith ("The Last Ship") as Melantha Jhirl, Gretchen Mol ("Boardwalk Empire") as Agatha, David Ajala ("Fast & Furious 6") as Roy Eris, and Brían F. O'Byrne ("Million Dollar Baby") as Auggie.
Sorry, GOT fans... you're gonna have to wait a bit longer to get the latest in your precious saga.
