Yeesh. After all the stories of on-set problems, it seems that this film has been off to a rough start; firing directors mid-set, unhappy actors, uneven direction from Ron Howard, uneven scripting... if you believe all the talk going around, it sounds like this movie is going to be the first major screw up from the extended Star Wars film line (besides I, II and III, obviously).
Not that the trailer looks terrible by any means; on the contrary, some stuff looks pretty cool. Lando chilling hard at a poker table, the idea of watching Han win the Falcon, seeing Chewie mack hard on a she-wookie, that train that goes zero g's and the blaster fight that is inevitably going to happen on it... it looks like they are going to do a lot of fan service in this flick, especially just watching a spic and span Falcon swooping and whooping through space.
The reason I feel a bit uneasy (besides the new Han's acting) is because this all feels a little too... familiar? Is that the word I'm looking for? It seems as if, especially with the new movies, they are relying a bit too much on nostalgia and not enough on their own uniqueness. Yeah, I wanna see jawas, but I also wanna see some new badass alien race. Sure, going back to Mos Eisley cantina would be great, but maybe I'd like to see some new weirdo alien bar. I am trying to keep my hopes up, but this kind of looks like a cookie cutter origin story, and one thing that Star Wars should never be is "cookie-cutter".
We'll all find out soon, on May 25th.
