This already sounded like a terrible idea to me, since it's tough to "spin-off" characters who haven't even appeared yet. This whole idea of introducing peripheral characters to the audience before introducing them to Spider-Man is tough sell, and although I am trying to stay optimistic, it is hard to fathom how these films are going to be, you know, "good." Going narratively backwards only worked in Memento, ok? Looking at you here, Venom. And Morbius. And Black Cat. And Silver Sable. See what I mean?
Silver & Black the Spidey spin-off featuring Black Cat and Silver Sable will no longer be hitting theaters Feb. 8, 2019. Directed by The Secret Life of Bees filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood, there has been no casting news, so everyone kind of already knew that there wouldn't be a complete film come February. As for the characters themselves... I just cannot understand how this is going to be interesting. Allow me to explain.
Black Cat is basically Cat-Woman, with "bad luck" powers, which are a lot like Domino's powers, but instead of good luck finding her, bad luck finds those around her. Cops chasing her will slip and fall, guns aimed at her will jam, alarms will malfunction, etc. Like Cat-Woman, she is also a thief, and I think we can all remember how well that Cat-Woman movie turned out. The problem here is that unlike Wonder Woman, these characters exist around other heroes. Wonder Woman has her own thing, which gets even better when she's surrounded by the Justice League. No one is dying to know what Black Cat is up to when she's not teaming up with Spider-Man, or fighting against him, as far as I know.
Same with Silver Sable, to a degree, although she's more interesting. Sable is a badass merc who runs her own gang of mercenaries called the Wild Pack, and in my opinion, her story could be pretty sweet. We see her come up, getting molded into a super merc (or better, just have her be awesome at the beginning), and then at the end, she gets her next target, which of course, is either Spidey or Venom. I'd be into it, and I can see Marvel trying to get their own super cool females on screen, but instead of a hero, she's more of an anti-hero.
Putting these two together just seems like an odd idea, but who am I to doubt the genius of Sony?
What do you think? Is this a bomb waiting to happen, or does the idea have merit? Let me know in the comments.
