This movie has been revived and cancelled and alive and dead so many times I can't even keep track, but it sounds like this is the last time. On Thursday, Crow director Corin Hardy and star Jason Momoa dropped out of the film, and Sony pulled their support for the film. What does that mean? It means that the movie is basically all the way back to the drawing board, dead in the water. To get this reboot moving again, we'd need a new director, new star, new studio and a bunch of money.
Since leaving the film, Hardy made a post on Instagram that shines a little light on what happened. Here's the post:
"I knew from the off, that the idea of making a new version of The Crow was never going to be for everyone, because it is a beloved film. And I say that as someone in love with it myself. But I poured everything I had into the last 3.5 years of work, to try & create something which honoured what the Crow stood for; from James O’Barr’s affecting graphic novel, to Alex Proyas’s original movie, with great respect to Brandon Lee and with the desire to make something bold and new, that myself, as an obsessive fan, could be proud of. And with @prideofgypsies Jason Momoa, and my amazing team of artists & film-makers, we came SO close. But sometimes, when you love something so much, you have to make hard decisions. And yesterday, deciding it was time to let go of this dark & emotional dream project, was the hardest decision of all.
Buildings burn, people die, but real love is forever."
At this point, who even knows if this would have been good? It sounds like the director had his head in the right place, but with so many damn reboots these days (not to mention graphic novel adaptations), it's hard not to feel like this would just be another unnecessary retread.
