According to Variety, Jared Leto will be reprising his role as the Joker in an upcoming DC film, independent of the upcoming Joker origin film that is set in the 80s and also, possibly independent from upcoming Justice League/Batman films.
Confused yet?
I like to sometimes just picture DC executives running around a boardroom screaming ideas at each other, and whatever they collectively remember at the end, they green-light. It's so sad watching this unfold; while I was a big fan of Marvel growing up, I was a DC kid at heart. Watching DC try and fail over and over and over to replicate the success of Marvel is truly pathetic. They just can't get anything together. Doing standalone films before big ensemble flicks is a good idea, but no one wants an 80s Joker origin story, and I'm about 90% sure that no one wants a standalone Joker film starring Jared Leto, either. I don't even really hate his interpretation, although I don't think it's great either; I just think it's a stupid idea.
We all know that part of the mystique is the not knowing. As Solo just found out, less is sometimes more, but apparently, someone thinks that doesn't really apply to them.
According to sources speaking with Variety, Leto is set to star and executive produce an untitled standalone film, paving the way for future movies branching from “Suicide Squad. Plot details are currently unknown, but the studio’s idea is to expand on the world created by “Suicide Squad” and tie into future installments of that property. Warner Bros. already announced that Margot Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn would be getting her own movie with a “Birds of Prey” feature, and the next goal was setting up a film for Leto’s Joker."
Super. Duper.
Thanks a lot DC.
