What if someone told you who you can and cannot love? What if there were strict societal laws concerning who you can be with, but you've fallen in love someone of a completely different race? What if that person was a different species? These are the subjects that are being explored in Mirka Andolfo’s newly translated book called UNNATURAL.
This tale stars a sweet and innocent pig-girl by the name of Leslie who wants something different in the world. She doesn’t want to be bound by conformity and wants to push herself outside her comfort zone. When she dreams, she dreams of a mysterious wolf that seems to haunt her when she sleeps. When she awakens, she is haunted by a feeling that she is being watched.
What I love about this book are the subtleties in context and content. This blossoming society favors people of the same race and different sex being married. However, if you were to love someone outside of your race, it would be breaking the law and punishable, and the severity depends on the crime.
This book is completely created by Mirka Andolfo; she wrote and illustrated it, which is always super impressive to me. If Mirka Andolfo doesn't sound familiar to you, she should; her work has been featured in DC comics: Harley Quinn, DC Comics Bombshells and Wonder Woman are three of the titles that she's drawn for, as well as work for other publications.
