Killing these characters off has long been played out, but they just keep on doing it. The eventual death of Wolverine concerned a virus that burned out his healing factor, then an attack by a ton of his enemies, until he was finally encased in liquid adamantium, where he (presumably) perished.
X-23 has been rocking the ears and claws as the All-New Wolverine, and the results have been pretty good. However, as we all know in the comic book world, no one stays dead for long, and now it's wolverine's time to come back to life. Marvel is calling the series, Return of Wolverine the conclusion of the trilogy that started in 2014 with Death of Wolverine and continued in Hunt For Wolverine, where Kitty Pride phases Wolverine out of the adamantium shell that he died in so he can have a proper burial. This spawned four miniseries where different heroes look for Wolverine's corpse, assuming that some nefarious plan is at hand, and it makes sense; someone is always cloning or replicating someone, or using someone's DNA to make an army of psycho killers or whatever. Bad guys gonna do what they do, you know? The four miniseries were titled Adamantium Agenda, Claws of a Killer, Mystery in Madripoor and Weapon Lost.
Now Wolverine is coming back for good and he's got some "cool" new powers to bring with him, which do not seem necessary, and will most likely be "burned out" or something similar by this time next year. Return of Wolverine, from Steve McNiven and Charles Soule, will feature a new power... for Wolverine's claws. As if unbreakable razor sharp claws weren't enough.
Writer Charles Soule had this to say about the new power: “One of the outwardly physical manifestations of that is that now, from time to time, his claws — once they’re popped — they can heat up.""They can get really hot.”
There you have it, friends. Now, when you have six 12 inch claws buried in your chest, you can also get burned at the same time. Talk about your overkill. After the series, Return of Wolverine, expect to see at least one monthly title, but we'll know more after the first issue of Wolverine's return debuts on September 19.
