Shazam! is the upcoming DC film based on the character Shazam! (or Captain Marvel, as he is sometimes called), which will be the 7th DC movie to come out of the DCEU, and hopefully, it will be good, because DC needs a frigging win.
Directed by David F. Sandberg and written by Henry Gayden, the film stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a kid who is one day granted legendary powers by a wizard. I know, it doesn't sound like a DC movie, but bear with me. In the books, the wizard Merlin (yes, that Merlin) grants him powers that activate by speaking the magic word "SHAZAM", which is an acronym of six "immortal elders": Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury, and he gets their attributes, so for example, the speed of Mercury, the strength of Hercules, and so on.
Here's the official synopsis:
Billy Batson, a troubled 14-year-old orphan, is set up to move into a new foster home - his seventh in a row - with the Vazquez family and their other five foster kids. One day, Billy gets on a subway car and finds himself transported to a different realm, where an ancient wizard gives him the power to transform into a godlike adult superhero by uttering the word "Shazam!" Billy and his new foster brother Freddy Freeman must learn what Billy's new powers are and how to use them in order to stop the villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana from wielding powers of his own.
Give the trailer a watch below, it definitely looks like it will be quite a bit more lighthearted than any DC movie that has come before it, and it actually reminds me a lot of Spider-Man: Homecoming, at least tonally. Shazam should hit theaters April of next year.
