In a move that no one really saw coming, Sir Patrick Stewart is returning to reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard, much to everyone's extreme delight. He recently appeared at a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, coming out of the sweet replica Enterprise doors like he'd never left, and he and Alex Kurtzman, executive producer of CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery, announced the new series, which is still waiting for a title.
Stewart sent out a message (read it in its entirety below) over twitter, saying that he thought that his time with Star Trek was over with the filming of Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002, but that it was "an unexpected but delightful surprise to find [Patrick Stewart] excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him.” Patrick Stewart played Jean Luc from 1987 through 1994, and of course, starred in the four films based on the series, none of which were all that great: Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis.
