The Batman has had a beleaguered past to say the least. First, Ben Affleck was going to both star in the film and direct, and then he was just going to star, and then he wasn't going to have anything to do with it at all. Then, Matt Reeves (War For The Planet Of The Apes) was going to take over for Affleck, then he was out, now he's back in. Fans were beginning to wonder if the film was going to be made at all, or if it was made, if it would look anything like the noir-style film that Reeves talked about making.
Now, it seems that things are back on track, according to an interview Reeves did with slashfilm.com. According to Reeves, they are "...working on getting our draft [in] the next couple weeks. Right now, my head is totally into the script. Right now, I’m going to be leaving here to go back to work on the script.”
Reeves also spoke on the rumors that his movie would be based on Frank Miller's Batman: Year One, with Reeves saying, the movie is not only not an origin tale, they're "...not doing any particular [comic]." He went on to say that, "Year One is one of the many comic books that I love. We are definitely not doing Year One. It’s just exciting to be focused very specifically on a tale that is defining for him and very personal to him. Obviously we’re not doing an origin tale or anything like that. We’re doing a story that is definitively Batman though and trying to tell a story that’s emotional and yet is really about him being the world’s greatest detective and all the things that for me, since I was a kid, made me love Batman.”
As for when we can expect to see the film, Reeves said that if everything goes as planned (although, so far, the pre-production has gone nothing even close to plan) they could be in front of cameras by this time next year, "hopefully spring or early summer".
