The Outlaw King is an upcoming Netflix film about the legendary King of Scots, Robert the Bruce, and his battle to wrest control of Scotland away from the English after he is declared an outlaw by the King of England himself. The ensuing civil war was long and bloody, and is your classic David vs. Goliath story, with Pine's army facing off against the largest army this side of the world.
The film looks great, and we haven't seen this story for a while, so the time might be ripe for an bloody underdog epic. The film is in good hands; the director, David Mackenzie’s last flick, the neo-western “Hell or High Water” was a best picture nominee, and also featured Chris Pine. The film is also set to open TIFF, the Toronto International Film Festival, and Mackenzie spoke about how important the festival is to his film.
“Thank you, TIFF, for welcoming our film into the world. The Festival is the perfect launch pad for our realistic epic, and we are delighted to be the first Scottish film ever to open Toronto,” the director said in a statement. “I cannot imagine a better place to have our World Premiere. Scotland and Canada’s histories are bound together, forged in the crucible of the struggles of history, bringing this day an affinity and sensibility that I hope will translate to a profound, visceral, and riotously entertaining experience. We have an amazing cast and crew working at the top of their game, and we are really looking forward to spreading some Scottish goodwill on the great city of Toronto.”
Outlaw King is set to hit select theaters and Netflix on November 9.
