Todd McFarlane has his hands firmly on the wheel of the upcoming Spawn movie, and it's a good thing for sure; after all, he created the character, so it makes sense he would write and direct the live action flick, because who knows Spawn better? And yes, I know he was involved with the first flick too, which sucked pretty hard. Still, I'd rather have him on board than off. Plus, he already nabbed Jamie Foxx for the title role, which is a solid get.
Also a good sign is a focus on practical effects, which I'll take any day of the week over CGI bs. Not to mention that the worst aspect (arguably) of the original film was the horrific special effects. It sounds like he's learned his lesson, and he said as much in a recent interview with comicbook.com.
"When I conceived of the story to start with, I never really thought of it as big special effects extravaganza because I knew we weren't going to have the budget for it. So I knew I was going to rely heavily on practical makeup and costuming, and one of the places that kept popping up was my good pal Greg Nicotero on his KNB Group. And he's obviously done a tremendous amount of work on dozens and dozens of movies. The sort of serendipitous part of it is that Greg was there at the beginning 20 years ago for the original Spawn movie."
Enter Greg Nicotero, who has most recently been directing episodes of the Walking Dead, a show that has sucked hard for a long time. Not that it's Nicotero's fault; TWD is just a shitty, boring show that has squandered its great premise, themes and talent. Nicotero is a longtime makeup artist, cutting his teeth on classics like Day of the Dead, Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, Halloween 5 and others. Now, he's bringing his considerable talent to bear on Spawn, and we can't wait to see what the results are.
"I've been friends with Todd since we did the original Spawn, and the guy's just a genius," said Nicotero. "I love the way his mind works. He thinks very, very graphically. I know he really loves the idea of Spawn being dark, and I love the animated show. It's just a really great opportunity for us to get a chance to collaborate again."
Spawn does not yet have a release date.
