The Haunting of Hill House is a 1959 gothic horror novel by American author Shirley Jackson, and was a finalist for the National Book Award, and is largely considered one of the best literary ghost stories published during the 20th century. The book has been adapted a few times already, with two feature films and a play based on the book in the last couple decades. Now we are getting another one.
The original story concerns four main characters: Dr. John Montague, an investigator of the supernatural; Eleanor Vance, a shy young woman who resents having lived as a recluse caring for her demanding invalid mother; Theodora, an artist; and Luke Sanderson, the young heir to Hill House, who is hosting the other guests. The crazy, paranormal stuff begins slow and steadily ramps up throughout the story, with paranoia and madness being keystones of the tale.
Netflix has pretty good success with horror, and it looks like they are going to turn this into a series, with the first season consisting of ten episodes, out on October 12, 2018.
Watch the trailer below, this looks like it just might be the real deal.
