These movies have a history of sucking, and sucking hard. The first film was ok, but the rest have been an incomprehensible jumble of loud noises, idiotic plotlines and choppy fighting, without a lot of what makes the Transformers so cool. It kind of reminds me of the DCU fight scenes, where, instead of having Superman, Wonder Woman and the Flash using their powers in conjunction with one another in cool ways, they just run around and slug everyone in the face. How hard is it to make Transformers good? Cars fighting motorcycles fighting jets is already awesome. Allow them to turn into 20 foot tall robots, and these flicks basically write themselves... or so one would think.
However, this new trailer for Bumblebee, which I initially laughed at (I mean, how desperate can you get?), actually looks decent, and the fight scenes look well-directed and fun. Maybe taking things down a notch and only focusing on one Transformer is a smart decision, and will help narrow things down so the series can find it's way. Then again, they shouldn't have to do that. After all, the only thing cooler than a transforming robot are multiple transforming robots.
Another cool thing about this trailer is the design of the bots. Optimus Prime looks more like his old, cartoon self, and the addition of a few new Transformers (evil jet/charger/camaro robots) and the fact that they've got Soundwave in it, the corniest and coolest Transformer, is a good sign as well.
Take a look at the trailer below and let me know what you think in the comments. Is this headed in the right direction? Or will this bomb like most of the others?
Looks like we'll all find out together this Christmas.
