Yeesh. I know it's October, so I shouldn't be bashing and trashing on scary flicks and try to be more optimistic, but this looks quite weak. We already have a few amazing kid-demon-possession-murderer movies, like "We Need To Talk About Kevin", "The Exorcist", "Insidious", "Sinister"... you name it, a kid has been possessed by it (or otherwise went nuts) and then hacked up his family.
In short, this better be good, because so far, it looks like a cross between crap and duuuumb.
Directed by McCarthy and written by executive producer Jeff Buhler, The Prodigy follows Sarah (Taylor Schilling Orange is the New Black) a woman who has a talented, genius level IQ son, but whose "disturbing behavior signals that an evil, possibly supernatural force has overtaken him. Fearing for her family’s safety, Sarah must grapple with her maternal instinct to love and protect Miles in favor of investigating what – or who – is causing his dark turn. She is forced to look for answers in the past, taking the audience on a wild ride; one where the line between perception and reality remains blurry.”
Huh.
As far as trailers go, this is a pretty boring one. Maybe I'm just jaded, but the trailer is a ton of setup that doesn't really go anywhere, and everyone has already seen the whole, "hypnotize the kid to get the monster to talk, then lose control" scenario played out a million times. I swear, these pastor/therapist types should really stop screwing around with shit they can't control.
The Prodigy stars Jackson Robert Scott (as Miles), Peter Mooney and Colm Feore, and Orion pictures will release the film on February 8, 2019.
