First we got news that there is going to be a new live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender (to a resounding, collective gasp of horror from almost everyone), now we have news that Cowboy Bebop is going live-action as well. In the words of Walter Sobchak from the Big Lebowski, "Has the whole world gone crazy?! Am I the only one around here who gives a shit about the rules?"
But I digress. There is some good news to this whole idea, so listen up: Shinichiro Watanabe, the director of the original anime, will serve as a consultant on the project, which is obviously a good thing. Christopher Yost, who wrote “Thor: The Dark World” (eh) and “Thor: Ragnarok” (aw, yeaaaaah!), will write the first episode and executive produce the series. A few major players from Sunrise Inc.– the studio behind the original series – will also executive produce. This lineup shows that they are taking the endeavor seriously, which is a good way to avoid another Shyamalan experience.
The live-action series is based on the 1998 Japanese anime television series of the same name, set in the year 2071, and follows a crew of bounty hunters traveling in their spaceship, which is called the Bebop. Drawing heavily from western and noir films and themes, it also deals with loneliness and the how difficult is can be to escape your past.
